Why Can I Understand German but Still Not Speak It Fluently?

I Understand German So Why Is Speaking Still So Difficult?

This is a challenge that many German learners experience.

You understand your lessons, read German texts, or watch German TV series without major difficulties. But as soon as you need to speak, you begin to feel uncertain.

Common thoughts include:

  • "I'm probably going to make mistakes."

  • "I can't find the right word."

  • "It takes me too long to answer."

This does not mean that your German is poor.

In many cases, the only thing missing is regular speaking practice.

You Learn a Language by Speaking It

Grammar and vocabulary provide the foundation.

However, fluent speaking develops only when you actively use the language.

The more often you communicate spontaneously in German, the easier it becomes for your brain to recall words and sentence structures automatically.

That is why learning vocabulary or completing grammar exercises alone is usually not enough.

What Happens in a German Conversation Course?

The main focus is on speaking freely.

You discuss current topics, talk about everyday situations, or analyze short texts and images.

During the course, you practice how to:

  • express your opinion

  • respond spontaneously

  • build convincing arguments

  • participate actively in conversations

  • use your vocabulary naturally

Grammar is not taught separately but is improved naturally through communication.

Why Small Groups Make a Difference

In small groups, every participant has much more speaking time.

The teacher moderates the discussions, provides individual feedback, and helps learners overcome language barriers step by step.

This creates a relaxed learning environment where making mistakes is encouraged as part of the learning process.

Our German Conversation Course at AKAZA

Our German Conversation Course is designed for learners with solid German skills—generally from B2 level—who want to improve their speaking ability.

The course is available online or in Leipzig.

Discussion topics change regularly, allowing participants to continue taking courses without repeating the same content.

Speaking Is the Key to Fluent German

Fluent German is not achieved by memorizing more and more grammar rules.

It develops through regular communication, real conversations, and the confidence to use the language actively.

The more often you speak German, the more confident you become, the richer your vocabulary grows, and the more natural the language feels.

Every conversation brings you one step closer to your goal—whether at work, at university, or in everyday life.
